Coming Down from Rising Fawn, Part 1
Norman Blake is one of the pioneers of flatpicking, with a guitar style influenced by old-time music and mandolin playing, but with his own unique sound. One of the characteristics of his playing is a sort of combined crosspicking/strumming sound that is almost impossible to duplicate. He also writes great tunes that combine old-time fiddle melodies with contemporary ideas. In this lesson, you’ll learn his three-part guitar tune “Coming Down from Rising Fawn,” from his 1974 album The Fields of November. Scott plays it through and then takes it apart, phrase by phrase. The A part has a simple song-like melody that showcases Norman’s “almost crosspicking” style of melody and rhythm playing. It also includes a characteristic down-up/strum lick in which he plays two quick bass notes, followed by a strum, which can take a little bit of practice to get right.
