Swing Soloing: “Panhandle Rag,” Part 1
The classic Western swing tune “Panhandle Rag” was recorded by Bob Wills and featured steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe. The instrumental tune has become popular with bluegrassers, but it also makes a good vehicle for demonstrating swing-style phrasing, which is quite different than bluegrass or fiddle tune phrasing. Scott starts by playing the melody of his arrangement and explains how in swing-style phrasing you think about the ends of the notes as well as the beginning. This is different from bluegrass-style playing, where the ends of the notes tend to blend into each other. To get a swing feel you need to think about how long the notes last, and you can use some different techniques to stop them when you want the notes to end. Scott then shows you some basic swing-style chord voicings and plays through the chord progression to “Panhandle Rag.”
