How to Play “Wagon Wheel”

In this lesson you’ll learn to play the jam-session favorite “Wagon Wheel,” using two different roll patterns, the alternating thumb roll and the forward reverse roll. Bill gives you advice on changing chords and keeping the roll going even if your fingers haven’t quite managed to finger the complete chord yet.

Forward-Reverse Roll Solos: “Worried Man Blues”

The great bluegrass singer and banjo player Ralph Stanley passed away this summer (read Bill’s tribute to Ralph here). In this lesson you’ll learn a solo to the folk classic “Worried Man Blues” inspired by the Stanley Brothers’ version of the song using forward-reverse rolls. Bill starts by reminding you how to play the forward-reverse roll and then shows you some variations on the roll, including versions using the D7 and C chords. After showing you the chord progression of “Worried Man Blues,” Bill shows you the melody and how to create a solo with the melody and the forward-reverse rolls. He ends the lesson by playing and singing “Worried Man Blues” at a slow tempo with guitarist Scott Nygaard so you can play along.
