J.D. Crowe, Part 2: “Blue Ridge Cabin Home” First Solo
Learning J.D. Crowe’s solos to “Blue Ridge Cabin Home,” along with the more basic Scruggs-style solo you learned last month, really gives you a great look at the kinds of possibilities you have for negotiating melodies on straightforward bluegrass tunes. It’s not necessary to memorize these solos exactly, just take what you want and try to see how you can use these ideas to create your own solos. Bill also talks about how to practice some of the phrases you’ll learn here, looping each measure over and over until you really get it down before moving on to the next measure. In this first part, Bill takes apart J.D.’s first solo.
