Bluegrass Rhythm Basics, Part 1: Boom-Chuck and G-Runs
The underlying rhythm of bluegrass and old-time country guitar playing is often called boom-chuck, where the “boom” (the bass note) is played on the 1 and 3 beats of a measure of 4/4, and the “chuck” (a strum on the treble strings) is played on the 2 and 4 beats of a measure or 4/4. This pattern has been at the heart of old-time and bluegrass guitar since the dawn of recorded country music. In this lesson, you’ll learn the boom-chuck rhythm, as well as some variations, and get advice on playing clear bass notes. You’ll also learn the classic Lester Flatt G-run.
